BASKETBALL REFEREE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Find answers to common questions about becoming a basketball referee, IAABO Board 52 membership, officiating requirements, training, meetings, and basketball referee certification in Westchester and Putnam County NY.

To become a basketball referee with IAABO Board 52, you must complete training classes, pass the written rules exam, and complete on-court evaluations. Board 52 provides basketball officiating education and mentoring for officials in Westchester and Putnam County NY.


You must be at least 18 years old to become a certified basketball referee with IAABO Board 52.


Yes. Basketball officials are paid per game. First-year officials can work modified, CYO, and freshman games, with higher-level assignments available as officials gain experience.


IAABO Board 52 provides basketball officiating services throughout Westchester County and Putnam County in New York.


Board 52 provides basketball rules education, mechanics training, game management instruction, mentoring, classroom instruction, and on-court evaluation for basketball officials.


DO NOT CALL an Executive Committee (EC) member. ALL INQUIRIES and ISSUES will be via email (Board52ec@gmail.com). If a phone call is necessary, the appropriate EC member will call you.  


Yes, declining a game will close out the day.


No. You MUST attend the MANDATORY Interpretation Meeting and MANDATORY Business Meeting. 


You must have the Recording Secretary of the board email the Board 52 Recording Secretary, validating your attendance. 


If you are required to attend an interpretation meeting and fail to do so, you cannot officiate. Additionally, a fine will be assessed of $150.

Late starts and 5th quarter fees are submitted directly through ZebraWeb in your game report.

  1. Login to ZebraWeb and enter the "NYSPHSAA Section 1 Boys Basketball" portal.
  2. From the main console, click Official’s Rating & Forms → Forms Center → Game Report.
  3. Enter the start and end date of the game, then select View Report.
  4. Choose the game you need to complete.
  5. Fill out the report:
    • Late Start → Select Yes, then enter the start time and which team was responsible.
    • 5th Quarter → Record the fee attestation for review by the Center for Interscholastic Athletics. 

        6.  Click Save Report to submit.
 

⚠️ Once the report is completed by an official, it is locked—only one official per game needs to file it
